LifePo4 Battery Chargers

Battery Charging Systems

When choosing a lithium battery charger you will want to make sure it is suitable for the battery you use.

Using a basic lead-acid battery charger to recharge lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries can be problematic due to several key differences in charging characteristics between these two types of batteries:

  1. Voltage Compatibility: LiFePO4 batteries typically have a nominal voltage of 3.2 to 3.3 volts per cell, while lead-acid batteries have a nominal voltage of around 2 volts per cell. Using a lead-acid charger on LiFePO4 batteries can result in overcharging, which can lead to reduced battery life, overheating, and even safety hazards such as fire or explosion.
  2. Charging Algorithm: Lead-acid batteries require a different charging algorithm than LiFePO4 batteries. Lead-acid batteries typically undergo three stages of charging: bulk, absorption, and float. LiFePO4 batteries require a different charging profile, typically a constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging algorithm, to ensure safe and efficient charging.
  3. Overcharging Risk: LiFePO4 batteries are sensitive to overcharging, and their chemistry does not tolerate prolonged exposure to high voltage or current levels. Lead-acid chargers may not have built-in safeguards to prevent overcharging LiFePO4 batteries, which can lead to irreversible damage and safety risks.
  4. Battery Management System (BMS) Compatibility: LiFePO4 batteries often include a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) to monitor cell voltages, temperatures, and ensure balanced charging and discharging. Lead-acid chargers are not designed to interface with the BMS of LiFePO4 batteries, which can result in improper charging and potential damage to the battery cells.
